Selecting a Durham Region Newborn Photographer
&
Preparing for Your Portrait Session

With so many photographers in the Durham Region and GTA it can be overwhelming to find the one that is right for your family. Here are some tips on what to ask, what to look for, and how to know you are hiring the right person for the job.

Choosing the Right Photographer

There are a few key factors when choosing your photographer:
Do they specialize in newborns?
Are the familiar with safe posing techniques?
How long have they been in business and how many babies have they worked with?

Here’s why:
Photographing newborns is not the same as photographing older children, weddings, or pets. There are many fine details that a photographer specializing in newborns works to master to ensure that you not only have beautiful images to remind you of how tiny and perfect he or she was, but your baby is kept safe and comfortable during the session.

Some other questions you may want to ask potential photographers are:
Do you work in a studio or do you work in your client’s home?
Are parents/siblings/pets allowed to participate in the session as well?
Is retouching provided on the images to smooth out any little marks, baby acne or dry skin?

Find a photographer that provides the services that are important to you. Some people will prefer to have a photographer come into their home, while other’s will value the consistency in lighting, temperature (and the fact that they don’t have to clean up or move furniture to accommodate) that comes with a studio setting.

Pricing

There are hundreds of newborn photographers around the GTA and Durham Region and the pricing for their services varies vastly. For some photography is a hobby, for others it is a profession. Be sure to weigh price vs. value and keep in mind that while new/less experienced photographers may offer “too good to be true” deals, an experienced newborn photographer typically books up a few weeks or months in advance so there may not be a second chance if you are unhappy with your images. Before paying a deposit or booking a session take a good look through their portfolio to make sure the images are consistent, babies look comfortable and the images match the photographer’s claims.
That said, be sure to stay within a budget that YOU are comfortable with, and don’t let anyone guilt you into purchasing beyond your budget.

When to book?

I recommend clients book within the first 2 weeks of the birth, while the baby is still squishy, sleepy and has that sweet “curled” appearance that disappears so quickly. Since the days after the arrival of your little one can be quite hectic it is wise to pre book your session so that you have one less thing to worry about after the delivery. In this way you ensure an appointment is available when baby arrives.
